WPD gives out free gun locks

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Part of being a responsible gun owner is being a safe gun owner.

Today the Wilmington Police Department handed out free gun locks as part of a national gun safety program called Project ChildSafe.

WPD will give out 100 locks to citizens in hopes of promoting safe firearms handling and secure storage practices among all gun owners. But don't worry if you could not pick one up today. Police say you still have an opportunity to get a lock.

"We'll have additional programs like this in the future, but we'll also have additional items like these, the gun locks, at the front desk here at the northwest and southeast division," WPD's Will Hatcher said.

The police department says the free locks are available on a first come first served basis.
