WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Verizon iPhone is here. Today many customers in the Cape Fear lined up to be among the first with the gadget that now has a new service provider.

The iPhone, which was only for the AT&T Wireless network, is now available on Verizon Wireless.

"I'm very excited," Danielle Dehardt said. "I was waiting for a long time."

Dehardt, a former Blackberry user, was one of many who had to have the phone on the first day of release.

"My Blackberry kept resetting on me and shutting off, and the iPhone is probably not going to do that to me," she said. "It seems more efficient definitely."

Workers at the Verizon Wireless store on South College Road in Wilmington said folks lined up early.

"The iPhone 4 is actually something a lot of customers have had a large demand for," store manager Jill Weaver said. "We've had a pretty good turnout this morning. We had quite a few campers out this morning who were here about 4 a.m."

Verizon Wireless thinks this highly sought gadget will attract new customers, including those who did business with AT&T because it was the only place to get the iPhone.

"I'm the one who wanted to be there when the iPhone was released with Verizon," said Susan Johnson, who switched to Verizon for the phone. It's important to have choice, and now I have choice."

Johnson said she's struggled with AT&T's service, but couldn't let go of her iPhone. Thursday's Johnson was finally able to switch carriers.

"The AT&T network may be fine for some people, but it wasn't satisfying my needs," she said. "So when I'd be in my office and I'd have half a bar and I needed to call a client, that was a problem."

When AT&T released the iPhone 4, there were several technical issues with the antenna. No word yet if Verizon's version has similar problems.
