Jailed NC author seeks new trial in murder case

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A Durham author convicted of killing his wife wants a new trial, based on revelations about flaws in the State Bureau of Investigation's crime lab.

Michael Peterson filed a request Tuesday for a new trial in the 2001 death of his wife, Kathleen.

Peterson's attorney, David Rudolf, says his client's conviction is tainted by testimony at the original trial from former SBI agent Duane Deaver.

The agency's blood lab has been criticized for months over false and misleading work in about 200 criminal cases. Deaver was fired by the SBI last month. He plans to appeal.

Peterson is currently serving a life prison term at Nash Correctional Institute.
