RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- North Carolina Sen. Kay Hagan wants to expand a tax credit offered to businesses who hire military veterans. The Democrat said Wednesday she is introducing a bill along with Republican Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts. The measure would give small businesses a credit of up to $4,000 for each military veteran they hire, including members of the National Guard or Reserve. Hagan cited the high unemployment rate among veterans as a reason for the bill. She thinks the measure has a very good chance of passing even as lawmakers look for ways to trim the nation's debt. They are working to determine an exact cost estimate if the bill is approved. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
