Perdue dims veto threat on GOP's health challenge

READ MORE:

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) -- Gov. Bev Perdue says Republican-backed legislation pushing North Carolina to join other states fighting the federal health care overhaul law isn't worth a veto battle.

The Charlotte Observer reported Friday that Perdue said during an interview with the newspaper's editors and reporters that she would not sign the bill now awaiting final action in the state House. The measure would become law without the Democratic governor's signature 10 days after she receives it.

The bill is a Republican priority. It aims to block a provision in last year's federal health overhaul law requiring most people buy health insurance or face a penalty.

The measure also directs Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper to defend the challenge in court.
