FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Busy day for fire crews in northern New Hanover County

READ MORE: FIRST ON 3 UPDATE: Busy day for fire crews in northern New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The conditions were just right to spark fires along Blue Clay Road in New Hanover County this afternoon.

Investigators say sparks from the steel wheels of a train on steel track were enough to set the surrounding brush on fire. Firefights worked to contain all four of the fires that started.

New Hanover County Battalion Chief Matt Smith says it was difficult to get to the fires because of where they were.

"We did not have any homes threatened," Smith said. "Most of the fires were adjacent to the railroad tracks. We did have small problem in accessing the fires, because they were down railroad tracks where there were no roads or anything, so they had to drive down the railroad tracks to get to some of these fires."

Fire Marshal Matt Davis says all four fires are out at this time.

Crews also battled another fire on Oakley Road near Castle Hayne. That fire started with an unattended burn.
