UNCW men's golf team rallies to win Seahawk Invitational Tournament at CC of Landfall

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- UNCW overcame a five-stroke deficit and sophomore Thomas Bass rallied to win medalist honors as the Seahawks completed a sweep of the Seahawk Invitational on Monday at the Country Club of Landfall.

The Seahawks (290-293-296=879) entered the final round in third, five strokes behind No. 25 Wake Forest (291-287-310=888) and carded a final round of 296 to pass the Demon Deacons and East Carolina (294-286-308=888) for their second tournament win of the 2010-11 season. UNCW won the VCU Shootout in the fall.

Bass (71-73-72=216), meanwhile, fashioned an even-par 72 in the third round for the win. It was his third top-10 finish and his first individual championship of his career. He entered the final round tied for fifth, but made a push early to take the lead and held on for the one-stroke victory.

Liberty (303-285-295=883) finished second in the 12-team field by posting the lowest score in the third round, a 295. Preston Dembowiak (78-67-72=217) finished second for the Flames while Robert Karlsson (73-71-76=220) added a fifth-place finish.

Wake Forest finished in a tie for third with East Carolina with South Carolina (304-285-301=890) rounding out the top five.

Joining Bass in the top 10 were freshman Payne McLeod (76-72-72=220) and senior Michael Taylor (72-74-74=220), both of who tied for fifth.

Senior Josh Brock (71-74-78=223) added a 15th-place finish while freshman Ryan Nagy (82-80-81=243) was 57th.

Led by senior Ryan Sullivan's (71-71-78=220) fifth-place finish, sophomore Taylor Zimmerman (75-76-81=232) and freshman Josh Woodfox (81-72-79=232) competed at individuals and finished tied for 34th overall.

Next for the Seahawks will be the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Mar. 11-13.
