Former UNCW hoops coach Jerry Wainwright will be honored as "CAA Legend" on Thursday

RICHMOND, VA (WWAY ) – Former UNCW men’s basketball coach Jerry Wainwright will be recognized on Thursday by the Colonial Athletic Association during the league’s CAA Legends program prior to the 2011 Men’s Basketball Championshi

Wainwright arrived at UNCW in 1994-95 and compiled a legacy of success over eight seasons as UNCW’s head coach that included four post-season berths, two CAA championships and the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory.

Wainwright coached the Seahawks to CAA titles and NCAA appearances in 2000 and 2002 and NIT bids in 1998 and 2001. The 1998 NIT game was UNCW’s first post-season entry in the program’s history.

In 2001-02, the Seahawks captured their second CAA championship and upset fourth-seeded Southern California in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

The successful coach, who compiled a 136-103 record, was named CAA Coach-of-the-Year in 1998 and 2001, and recruited four Dean Ehlers Leadership Award winners and 15 CAA All-Academic Team selections.

UNCW’s CAA Legends: Bill Donlon (2003), Dave Wolff (2004), Garry Cooper (2005), Bill Brooks (2006), Greg Bender (2007), Mel Gibson (2008), Shawn Williams (2009), Jerry Wainwright (2011). The program was not conducted in 2010 because of the CAA’s 25th Anniversary Celebration.
