Whiteville farmer wins million dollars on lottery ticket

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, NC (News Release) – Russell Menser, a farmer from Whiteville, can count himself among the luckiest people in Columbus County after the Powerball ticket he purchased for the Feb. 26 drawing wound up being worth $1 million. The Powerball ticket was offered to him after a previous customer decided they didn’t want to purchase it. Although Menser had not planned on making a lottery purchase that day, he agreed to buy the ticket. The $2 Powerplay ticket matched all five white balls but not the Power Ball and automatically won the $1 million prize. Menser did not know just how much he’d won until he arrived at NCEL headquarters in Raleigh.

“I thought I had won two or three thousand,” Menser said. “It still hasn’t hit me yet.” Menser said he may use his winnings, worth $680,000 after taxes, to purchase a home. The winning ticket was purchased at the Time Saver Food Store on James B. White Highway in Whiteville.

The Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is $25 million if taken as an annuity or $12.5 million as a lump sum. North Carolina Powerball players won $146,602 in the Wednesday, March 2 Powerball drawing including 24,245 winners of $3 to $20,000.
