$80 million gift will improve 3 buildings at Duke

DURHAM, NC (AP) -- An $80 million gift from the Duke Endowment will be used to renovate a student union center and to improve acoustics, seating and other amenities at two campus auditoriums.

Endowment chairman Neil Williams said Monday it was the largest gift ever awarded by the endowment and is the largest single donation of any sort for Duke University.

The Duke Endowment was created 87 years ago by James B. Duke, an original investor in Catawba Power Co., which later became Duke Energy. Part of the endowment is earmarked for campus improvements at Duke, Davidson College and Johnson C. Smith University in North Carolina and Furman University in South Carolina.

The Baldwin Auditorium on the East Campus is used for student musical performances. Page Auditorium houses theater productions.
