Chefs square off in culinary competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Kitchen Stadium has moved to UNCW with a statewide "Iron Chef" style competition. Forty-two chefs from across the Carolinas made their way to campus today to face off during the Aramark Culinary Excellence Chef Competition.

The contestants received a mystery basket full of ingredients and three hours to create a menu using those items.

Chef Boeing Koo says his selection of ingredients is unique, but he will work to make a good end result.

"I'm OK with them. I can make them work," Koo said. "Some of them are a little difficult, quantities and stuff like that are hard to work with, but trying to do testing plates. They're a little small. I'm OK with it."

The competition started today and continues through tomorrow with an award ceremony Thursday. Five judges are responsible for deciding the winner of the competition, which uses produce from local farms.
