GOP likely needs more Democrats for veto override

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- House Republican leaders say they'll probably go ahead to try to override Gov. Beverly Perdue's veto blocking an effort to challenge a provision in the federal health care overhaul law, although it appears Democrats are closing ranks against it.

House Speaker Thom Tillis of Mecklenburg County said a vote was still planned for later Wednesday, although he told some tea party advocates visiting his office it may be an uphill battle.

Two House Democrats joined Republicans in voting for the health care challenge two weeks ago. But House Minority Leader Joe Hackney of Orange County predicted all Democrats would vote to sustain the veto.

As many as 72 votes are needed to get the supermajority in the House to override. It also would have to pass the Senate.
