Early St. Patrick's celebrations paint the town green

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- St. Patrick’s Day is just a few days away, and Wilmington is already celebrating.

The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade danced through the streets of downtown Wilmington Saturday. The parade featured Irish dancers, Irish bands, local queens and princesses of all ages and antique cars.

Although the day is all about celebrating Ireland and St. Patrick, parade spectator Jerry Winager said everyone is Irish on St. Patty's.

"Brings families together, makes people proud of where they're from and who they are. It's a good holiday," Winager said. His son Liam thinks St. Patrick is cool.

"He takes snakes off Ireland," Liam said of the saint's legend. "That's right, he drove the snakes out of Ireland."

St. Patrick is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. St. Patty's is always celebrated on March 17, which is believed to be the anniversary of the beloved Patrick’s death.
