From the mom's point of view, sounds like a case of bullying and the police turned their head the other way until it got too 'deadly'.
We (as a community) have to do more.* If the mom's actions was a case of self-defense (for her daughter), then I wish her no ill will. Sure, there were probably other ways to prevent things from escalating, but I'm glad this did not end like a fight did several weeks ago in which a girl's life was snuffed out instantly.
*And by doing more, we need to teach ourselves (especially the youth) about how to interact with different people and change our own perceptions. Volunteer at mentoring/community organizations or start one of your own. I definitely vote for community watch groups and economic development councils.
