Collected drugs go up in smoke

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Thousands of pounds of medications are off the street for good. The final step of Operation Medicine Drop took place today at the WASTEC facility in New Hanover County.

The SBI dropped off the medication collected statewide as part of a program to dispose of drugs properly. It helps get the drugs out of the reach of children and teens. Operation Medicine Drop will also keep the medication out of our water system by keeping the pills from being flushed down the toilet.

"It negatively impacts the aquatic environment, our streams and lakes," New Hanover Co. Environmental Manager Paul Marlow said. "The ultimate destruction of these medications is the preferred method."

New Hanover County's WASTEC facility was one of two locations in the state used to dispose of the drugs. More than 2.5 tons were incinerated.
