Federal grant to buy boats for port security

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- At their meeting tonight, New Hanover County Commissioners will discuss accepting a federal grant for boats to patrol near the State Port.

The Federal Port Security Grant will allow the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office to replace its current boat. It is used for numerous operations along the Cape Fear River.

This same grant will also pay for a boat for the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the grant for more than $580,000 is a big help, not only to the sheriff's office, but county tax payers as well.

"The federal grant is able to pay for the boats and also pay for service for two years on it, so that's another fee that tax payers don't have to pick up," New Hanover County Sheriff's spokesman Cpl. Jerry Brewer said.

The grant will also pay for all the equipment on the boat like sonar and navigation.

The current boat used to patrol the waters of New Hanover County is more than five years old.
