WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County Commissioners made a big decision about the future of the county's trash during their meeting last night.
R3 is out of the picture and New Hanover County was using WASTEC at the cost of about $500,000 a month. With the current budget, no money is allocated to continue doing that, and commissioners voted to immediately shut down the plant.
This means that several employees will be laid off, like Frank Benogozzi, who has worked at WASTEC for 25 years.
"Well, there's a lot of families and, you know, and right now times are hard so it's going to be tough for people to find jobs in a bad economy," he said.
Commissioners say that the county was losing money every month. They hope to develop a comprehensive plan to bring back to the board.
Benogozzi says he hopes other employees will be given a job when that time comes.
