Safety device makes difference in high-speed crash

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Scary moments for a DOT work crew and a South Carolina driver earlier today, as the driver collided with a work truck.

The crash happened east of Whiteville on US 74/76 around noon.

The Toyota sedan hit a safety device mounted on the back of a DOT work truck. DOT officials say the crash impact attenuator is designed for the situations like this, and is the reason no one was killed.

"It did exactly what it was suppose to, car traveling at normal rate of speed, 70 miles an hour out here, and he ran into the back of the crash impact attenuator, and it protected the people that were working," NCDOT Inspector Fred Edwards said.

No doubt the crash looks bad, but neither the driver nor the four crew members suffered any major injuries.

No word yet if the driver of the sedan will face any charges.
