WILMINGTON -- A Wilmington man is angry at Animal Control and his neighbor tonight after losing his dog to a deadly disease. J.C. Corbett says his dog Shadow died of parvo.
It's a highly contagious virus primarily spread from dog to dog. Corbett said his neighbor's dog is always running loose through the neighborhood. Corbett thinks Shadow caught the parvo virus from that unruly dog. Corbett has two rottweilers left.
They usually stay in his yard, but if he doesn't keep his fence locked neighborhood dogs have been known to wander onto his property. Corbett has called Animal Control a number of times to complain about the loose dogs, but so far, it hasn't stopped the problem. The situation took a turn for the worse recently when his dog caught a contagious disease and died.
"The dog got sick that Saturday; I stayed up all night long with him. The dog died Sunday, so Monday I carried him to the vet and put him in the back of my car, and the vet did an autopsy," Corbett said. "She explained to me that the dog had parvo.
"The disease Shadow tested positive for is easily spread from one dog to another and rottweilers are particularly vulnerable to it. It would be difficult to prove exactly how Shadow got parvo, but vets say it's certainly possible he caught it from one of the neighborhood dogs.
Corbett says he had $1,000 and a lot of time and energy invested in Shadow. He's blaming Animal Control for failing to keep his neighbors dogs off his property, but vets say it's not that simple.
