Bike ride honors father, son killed

READ MORE: Bike ride honors father, son killed

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- It's been more than a week since the accident that took the lives of a father and son who were cycling on River Road in Wilmington. Sunday family and friends of David and Trey Doolittle got together for a memorial bike ride in honor of the two cyclists.

Murray Middle School in Wilmington was packed Sunday with hundreds of cyclists of all ages. All of them there to honor David and Trey Doolittle. The two were cycling on River Road last Sunday when investigators say an impaired Thomas Grooms Jr. ran over the father and son with his sedan.

Trey's classmates say the massive turnout for the memorial bike ride shows that the Doolittles were loved by many.

"It just shows how much of an impact him and hid dad had on the community and how many people they knew," George Webb said.

Classmate Nathan Watson said, "Trey knew a lot of people, and so did his dad. I think everyone here is here for a reason."

Besides just honoring David and Trey, many were also riding for other reasons. Cyclists say they want to raise awareness for safety and drunk driving.

Trey's classmate says the Doolittles' tragedy gives reason to spread their message to the community.

Many of the participants say the ride should be an annual event not just to honor the Doolittles but everyone who has lost their lives while riding.
