RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A former employee of Camp Lejeune schools has sued the federal government, saying that contaminated water at the Marine base caused her to develop an aggressive form of cancer.
Linda Jones of Jacksonville says she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 2007, after working in food service at Camp Lejeune schools for about 22 years.
Wells at the base were contaminated by fuel leaks and other sources of pollution before being closed two decades ago. Health officials think as many as 1 million people may have been exposed to tainted water.
Jones' lawsuit has been consolidated with others before a special court in Atlanta.
A spokeswoman for the Navy's Office of the Judge Advocate General said the agency doesn't comment on pending litigation.
