Customers say Value Place hotel has bed bug problem

READ MORE: Customers say Value Place hotel has bed bug problem

WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- We've all heard the saying "sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite," but a Wilmington hotel customer says she did not sleep too well Thursday night because of a few creepy crawlies.

Wendy Howard stayed in the Value Place, an extended stay hotel on Carolina Beach Road. She says she didn't sleep too well after seeing a few bed bugs and roaches.

"I saw a bed bug, and maybe five or six baby roaches," said Howard. "They were crawling in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and in the immediate area that we were staying. I felt totally disgusted, because I've never seen bed bugs except for on television."

Howard says she showed a hotel worker a bug crawling up the wall in her room, but says nothing was done about it. She says another worker at Value Place accused her and her fiancé of bringing the bugs with them and infesting the room.

"They accused us of bringing this, when they and I both know that in order for bed bugs to be there, it has to be an infestation," said Howard. "In order for baby roaches to be there, they had to have hatched from somewhere."

Howard says a hotel worker told her and her fiancé to leave immediately. She says she did get a partial refund from value place, but doesn't plan on staying there again.

"I do believe that the whole hotel should be evacuated," said Howard. "It needs to be checked for bed bugs and roaches."

Howard says she has informed the health department about Value Place's bug problem, but says they have not gotten back to her.

We talked to another customer who says she and her husband have stayed at the Value Place for months. She says they, too, have had problems with bugs.

We tried reaching someone from Value Place for a comment on the bug problem, but no one would speak with us.
