5 killed when vehicle overturns in NC canal

CROATAN NATIONAL FOREST, NC (AP) -- Two adults and three
children have been identified as the victims of a wreck where a
sports utility vehicle ran off a road into a canal in the Croatan
National Forest.

Officials said Monday the driver was 24-year-old Maria Gonzales.
Also killed were 24-year-old Abdiel Solis; 6-year-old Alexander
Gomez; 2-year-old Adeylis Salgonzalez; and four-month-old Abdiel
Solis, Jr. The hometowns were not immediately available but the SUV
was registered in Havelock.

Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern said all were dead on
arrival Sunday evening.

The car landed on its roof under several feet of water. The
water and mud made recovery of bodies difficult.

The two youngest children were still in their car seats.

Croatan National Forest has 160,000 acres of bogs, salt water
estuaries and pine forests.
