FIRST ON 3: Sheriff's chopper officially sold

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover County no longer owns a helicopter.

The county says Kenneth Pyatt from Sky Helicopters out of Garland, TX, came to town today. Pyatt had the highest bid in an online auction for the helicopter.

The county says Pyatt delivered a cashier’s check for $425,000 for the purchase of the 2008 Robinson R44 II helicopter.

Sheriff Ed McMahon decided to sell the chopper after his pilot resigned last year. The Sheriff's Office has since joined the multi-agency SABLE helicopter program.

Sky Helicopters says it plans to use the chopper for some mapping work in the Dallas area using an infrared camera.
