WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Coast Guard Cutter Diligence crew serves our country and our city. Saturday, they served in a different way, by hosting a race that gives back to local organizations.
Over 250 runners participated in the 18th annual Dili Dash. The Coast Guard and the Crystal Coast Chief Petty Officer Association team up each year and donate all race proceeds to Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity and the Cape Fear Domestic Violence Shelter. Crew member Nick Jokela said the Diligence and her crew are honored to be part of a Coast Guard City and want to serve at home and abroad.
"We get feedback all the time,” Jokela said. “They [the organizations] are just glad that, being a local unit, and being gone for half the year, that we're able to give back to the community as much as we do. So, it's really neat. It helps out the community a lot."
Runners raced through downtown Wilmington and finished next to the Diligence. Jokela said the race is a tradition but is usually never at the same time each year because missions are always changing. The fastest runner crossed the finish line in just over 20 minutes.
