Illegal immigrant faces charges in three rapes in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities in Charlotte have charged an illegal immigrant who was about to be deported with raping three women.

Jose C. Rivera was in Atlanta awaiting deportation. The rape charges filed Friday will stop the deportation proceedings.

Rivera is accused of attacking three women between April 2004 and September 2005. Police say he talked his way into a victim's home, attacked another outside her apartment and grabbed a jogger who was running alone. The attacker used a weapon in each case.

Rivera is from Honduras. He has been jailed at least eight times in Mecklenburg County since 2004.
