Higher fees in NC budget bill gets panel review

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- House Republicans are taking the next step
toward completing their version of the North Carolina state
government budget by next week.

The House Finance Committee scheduled a Tuesday morning meeting
to discuss and vote on higher fees contained in the proposed
spending plan for the next two years.

Tens of millions of dollars in higher court fees are pieces of
the puzzle that GOP leaders want to use to close a projected budget
gap of roughly $2.5 billion. Spending cuts will be discussed in
more detail Wednesday in the full House Appropriations Committee. A
floor vote is expected next week.

Finance Committee senior chairwoman Rep. Julia Howard of
Mocksville said a separate bill containing tax changes designed to
help business create more jobs will be rolled out in a week.
