WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A local health provider is expanding by adding a doctor's office somewhere you may already go regularly.
From groceries to clothing you can get almost anything at Walmart, but soon customers will also be able to see a doctor at the popular store.
"I think it will be great for the college students that are from out of town that don't have doctor's offices to go to," shopper Madeline Simmons said.
Wilmington Health has teamed up with the Walmart off Market Street. A fully functional physician's office will sit inside the superstore come early summer.
"The clinic is pretty much constructed. The space is available for us," Wilmington Health CEO Jeff James said. "There's nine exam rooms there's enough room in there for a potential of up to three providers."
The goal for both Wilmington Health and Walmart is to provide easier access to health care. Walmart employees and customers would not have to go far to get medical attention.
"Everybody comes to Walmart, so if they're in need of a doctor, there's one here now," Simmons said.
But not everyone has been sold on the idea of going to a Walmart to see a doctor. Wilmington Health says people should not think of this new office as the retail clinics of the past.
"What it really is, it's simply a location that happens to be at Walmart, where the same breadth and depth and quality of services can be achieved for our patients in a more convenient manner," James said.
And nothing says convenient like doing your grocery shopping, servicing your vehicle and, come summer, checking in with the doc all in one place. But James says it's too early to tell if other doctor's offices will pop up at other retail locations.
