HARRISONBURG, Virginia - Johnny Bladel had two hits and three relievers combined to hold UNCW to a run over the final 4 1/3 innings as James Madison completed a sweep of visiting UNCW with a 9-6 win on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park. With the sweep, the Dukes raised their record to 30-15 overall and 15-9 in the
league. The Seahawks, who suffered their fifth straight loss, dropped to 23-21 and 12-9. Josh Futter (2-0) picked the win out of the bullpen for the Dukes, who swept UNCW for the first time since 2002. Futter tossed three innings of shutout, hit-less baseball.
UNCW grabbed a short-lived lead in the sixth, 6-5, on a RBI single by Cameron Cockman, who finished with two hits and a pair of runs batted in. In the JMU half of the inning, Alex Foltz belted a leadoff home run off starter Tyler McSwain to tie the game. The Dukes would add two in the seventh and a run in the eighth to make it 9-6.
In the third, JMU tagged McSwain for four runs on a pair of hits and three walks, one intentional. David Herbek highlighted the inning with a three-run single down the leftfield line, but left the game with a leg injury.
UNCW battled back in the top of the fifth to tie it, sending nine hitters to the plate and pushing across five runs. Hunter Ridge doubled in the final two runs of the outburst. Ryan LaGrange added a RBI double earlier in the inning against starter Alex Valadja, who carried a no-hitter into the inning.
Kelly Secrest (2-1) took the loss for UNCW. The Seahawks host Elon on Tuesday in a 6 p.m. start.
