Police: Suspect kills himself after wounding cop

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) - Fayetteville police say a man suspected of shooting and wounding an officer has died after shooting himself during a standoff with police.

Police said the officer was shot in the chest around 1:30 a.m. Monday shortly after police responded to a call and found a suspect barricaded in a house near Fort Bragg. The standoff ended about 6:30 a.m. when the suspect was found shot to death in an apparent suicide.

Fayetteville Police Officer Jason Westbrook says the wounded officer was undergoing surgery at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. His name was not immediately released.

The officer is expected to survive.

A second man that police say was the suspect's brother also was shot and taken to the hospital. No information about his condition was immediately available.
