NC Senate looking to spend more on UNC system

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- The development of a North Carolina state budget is taking a slightly different path now that senators have started meeting in committees after the House approved its plan last week.

Six Senate budget subcommittees met Tuesday morning. Leaders of the Senate education subcommittee announced they want to spend more than the House did in the University of North Carolina system and less on the public schools and community colleges. Overall, senators aim to spend $40 million less on public education compared to the House.

Senate leader Phil Berger told reporters he wants the chamber's plan voted through committees before Memorial Day weekend and on the floor the following Tuesday.

The Legislature and Gov. Bev Perdue want to agree on a budget before the new fiscal year begins July 1.
