William and Susan Starling's grandfather was shot to death while serving in 1931. "We've been waiting for this day. What a great honor for our family member," Susan said.
Officers carried a single red rose for each 11 officers from New Hanover County that were killed. Family members of those lost placed the roses on a memorial wreath.
Tonight marked a moment Eleanor Williams will not soon forget. Her son, Christopher, was killed in the line of duty in 2006. Williams says she can can now look back on her son's commitment to service and smile. "It's not so much a sense of loss as it a sense of pride."
Tonight's event comes ahead of the kickoff of National Police Week this weekend in Washington D.C.
