Tennnis sectionals serve up intense action

RALEIGH,NC (WWAY) -- The championship pairings are set for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men's tennis championships at Millbrook Exchange Park.

Finals are scheduled for Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Three rounds were played on Friday, with the semifinal round Friday afternoon including four tough three-set matches.

In singles, 2009 champ Robbie Mudge of Winston-Salem R.J. Reynolds will play Roman Cacha of Raleigh Athens Drive for the championship. Mudge was unable to compete in last year's tournament due to injury.

Mudge outlasted Peter McDonald of East Chapel Hill, last year's runner-up, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals while Cacha was eliminating Landon Kinsey of Greensboro Page, rallying from a set down to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Both earlier won a pair of matches.

The R.J. Reynolds doubles team of Paul Yamane and Jack Riazzi won their semifinal Friday afternoon in amazing fashion, dropping the first set at love to the East Chapel Hill pair of Sam Weissler and Kassim Alani. But then Yamane and Riazzi stormed back to win the second set at love and then win a third-set tiebreaker to ttake the match 0-6, 6-0, 7-6 (7).

The Reynolds duo will face Quinn Carmean and Sean Carmean of Raleigh Millbrook for the championship. Carmean and Carmean defeated Sammy Kohl and Alex Gaines of Wilmington New Hanover in three sets in the semifinals to advance.

BURLINGTON -- Two players who competed in the doubles championship a year ago advanced to the semifinals in singles competition on Friday in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men's tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Joey Hatala of Waxhaw Marvin Ridge and Matt Daly of Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons won their first two matches in straight sets to advance to Saturday's semifinals, with Daly dropping only one game in four sets.

Hatala had teamed with Andrew Treske last year to win the 2010 doubles title, beating Daly and Chris Geaslen in the finals.

Hatala will face Western Alamance's Eric Greene in one semifinal while Daly takes on Charlotte Catholic's Kyle Johnson, who lost only three games in four sets on the opening day of play.

In doubles, the Cardinal Gibbons team of Geaslen and Killian Steer took a pair of easy wins and will face Owen Fike and Adam Glover of Southern Nash in the semifinals. The other pairing in the semifinals has Alex Southard and Logan Williams of Northern Guilford) going against Morris Porter and Tito Poplawski of Asheville.

The Asheville pair had to battle past Jarod Styres and Aaron Weber of Chapel Hill in a tough three-set match in the quarterfinals.

CARY-- Two Newton-Conover High School teams have advanced to the doubles semifinals after Friday's action in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men's tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

The Red Devil pairs of Hang Lak Choi and Ryan Lampe along with Austin Adams and John Tate each won a pair of matches in straight sets to advance to Saturday morning's semifinals. Choi and Lampe will face Evan Day and Jesse Massucco of Wilkes Central, while Adams and Tate will take on Ray Webb Parker and Ben Cheaney of Shelby.

In an interesting twist, both Choi and Lampe played in the doubles final a year ago when it was an all-Newton-Conover championship. Choi and Will Huggins teamed to beat Lamp and Dillon Cervantez in the 2010 final.

In singles, the four semifinalists all advanced Friday with a pair of wins. All were in straight sets, except Steven Page of Salisbury had to rally past John Reid of Newton-Conover in the quarterfinals, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Saturday morning's singles matches will pit Jordan Bailey of Hampstead Topsail against Korey Lovett of Brevard, while South Iredell's Patrick Hensley battles Page. Action is slated to start at 9 a.m.

CARY-- The Mount Airy team of Mitch Kessler and Eric Belton survived a pair of tough three-set doubles matches on Friday to advance to the championship in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A tennis championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

The Mount Airy duo defeated Brackin Kirkland and Charles Colhoun of Hendersonville in the semifinals in a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5), after outlasting Alex Dunham and Jordan Deloatch of Raleigh Charter in a tough three-set match on Friday morning.

Kessler and Belton will face Kevin Weckworth and Joseph Riazzi of Kernersville Bishop McGuinness for the doubles title.

Russell Turner of Durham's North Carolina School of Science and Math will square off against Elkin's Tyler Macy for the singles championship on Saturday morning. They each won their two matches in straight sets and each lost only four games in the process.
