UNCW men's golf team slips at NCAA regional

RADFORD,VA (WWAY) -- UNCW's 1-2 punch of Josh Brock and Payne McLeod remained near the top of the individual leaderboard, but the Seahawks plummeted into a tie for 12th place following the second round of the Virginia Tech Men's Golf Regional Friday at the challenging Pete Dye River Course.

The Seahawks, who stood eighth after the first day, shot a 26-over-par 314 in the second round for a 304-314=618 total over the two-days on the Par 72, 7,685-yard layout. Coach Matt Clark's club tees off early Saturday in the third and final round of the 54-hole event nestled along the banks of the scenic New River.

"It was a rough day out there for us, but there were also some good things that happened out there," Clark said of Friday's freefall. "We had two great individual scores again today, but unfortunately we couldn't give them the need they needed. I know the guys will show a lot of heart tomorrow."

The top five teams and one individual not on those teams advance to the national championship May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla. Both Brock and McLeod are in the conversation for a trip to the nationals.

Atlantic Coast Conference champion Georgia Tech maintained its overall lead in the tournament with a 289-293=582 score, three shots ahead of conference rival Duke at 295-290=585. Oklahoma, with a 296-292=588 score, trails the Yellow Jackets by six strokes.

The Seahawks had the earliest tee times on Friday and played with rival East Carolina and LSU, teeing off on No. 10.

Individually, Brock and McLeod, both All-CAA performers, mirrored each other on the scoreboard. Brock birdied three of the last four holes to card a 1-over-par 73 on Friday and owns an even par total of 71-73=144, just two shots off the pace. He is tied for third with Georgia Tech's James White. Oklahoma's Abraham Ancer and GT's Kyle Scott share the individual lead with 141 totals. Ancer fired a 1-under 71 on Friday, while Scott fashioned a 1-over 73.

McLeod, meanwhile, owns a 71-74=145 scorecard and is locked in a five-way tie for fifth place. He struggled with a 40 on the first nine, but rebounded for a 2-under 34 on the second nine on Friday.

The Seahawks with be paired with Lamar and Mississippi during Saturday's final round. The tee times are as follows: Taylor Zimmerman (8:20 a.m.), Josh Woodfox (8:30 a.m.), Michael Taylor (8:40 a.m.), Payne McLeod (8:50 a.m.), Josh Brock (9:00 a.m.).
