Friday night sports...big night for upsets, but Donnell Holmes wins impressively in boxing ring


WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY) -- We had more than six minutes of sports on WWAY Friday night. Hopefully you caught our 11pm sportscast. Below is a brief written recap of some of the big stories Friday night.

pro boxing: Pender County native Donnell Holmes won by knockout in the second round over Jimmy Haynes in Raleigh.

college baseball: UNCW lost to VCU 15-6, but the Seahawks have locked up a spot in next week's CAA baseball tournement due to Georgia State's loss to George Mason on Friday.

colege golf: UNCW'S Josh Brock is tied for third place at the NCAA men's regional in Virginia with one round left. UNCW's team is currently tied for 12th place.

college golf: Cape Fear Community College men's golf team finished tied for 10th at the national junior tournament in Odessa, Texas.

high school baseball state playoffs: Hoggard 2 Clayton 1..... Ashley 14 Pinecrest 12. The Eagles trauked by 8 runs midway through the game. Hoggard will host Ashley on Tuesday...... North Brunswick 2 East Duplin 1..... North Brunswick will travel to South Lenoir on Tuesay.... South Lenoir 10 Whiteville 2.....

high school softball state playoffs: Ashley 9 Knightdale 0.... Laney 1 West Johnston 0. Ashley will host Laney on Tuesday.... Topsail 8 Beddingfield 4.... Ttpsail will travel to Northeastern on Tuesday....Pamlico 3 Trask 0..... Pender 7 Dixon 3.... Pender will host Pamlico on Tuesday....West Bladen 5 SW Edgecombe 4.... West Bladen will host Swanbsboro on Tuesday......South Central 2 West Brunswick 0.....

high school soccer state playoffs: New Bern 2 Hoggard 0. Vikings end season at 19-2-1.

high school state tennis playoffs for independent schools: Cape Fear Academy boys team remains alive with one day of tennis left in the state tournament.

The Wilmington Sea Dawgs lost to Cary 97-93 on Friday in the home opener for the Dawgs. Wilmington is now 0-4 on the season.
