MANTEO, NC (AP) -- Fire officials battling a long-running blaze near Stumpy Point in Dare County have opened U.S. Highway 264 for the first time in three weeks. Officials say the road will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. beginning Monday. Travelers using that section of U.S. 264 will be accompanied by an escort vehicle. Delays of up to 30 minutes at checkpoints are possible. Extremely heavy smoke mixed with fog has hampered visibility in the area. Officials warn the return of heavy smoke conditions or firefighters working in the area could cause the road to be closed again temporarily. The wildfire was discovered May 28 and has burned more than 25,000 acres. Investigators say it was caused by lightening. The blaze is 85% contained. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press.
