WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The New Brooklyn Homes at Robert Taylor Estates in Wilmington is now home to dozens of low income families. But the completion of this project was not problem free. Earlier this year several construction workers contacted WWAY saying they were not being paid in full.
The Wilmington Housing Authority says it is just glad the construction of this complex has come to an end. Meanwhile, the Department of Labor has been looking into allegations against a subcontractor on the project.
Monday local and state officials celebrated the opening of the 48 apartments; along with family members of Dr. Robert Taylor, who was a Wilmington native and the first African-American to attend MIT.
"That speaks volumes how somebody from Wilmington, NC, can make a difference," Taylor's great grandniece Beryl Anderson said. "Wilmington could spread its wings and fly."
The Housing Authority says the new complex, just like any other construction project ran into some problems. Dozens of workers said they were not paid in full or paid at all. When we first heard of these allegations in March, we followed the money trail to sub-contractor Robert Miller and his company NC Contracting out of Cary.
WHA CEO Michael Krause says they helped guide the unpaid workers to proper agency, but that there was little else the housing authority could do.
"It's really outside of the hands of the Wilmington Housing Authority. We were never really involved," he said. "The Department of Labor is conducting a investigation against the sub-contractor."
According to the state Department of Labor, that investigation has been closed after the two complainants finally got their money.
Miller did tell WWAY back in March that he would pay every employee in the coming weeks. Comments on our website, though, say some workers are still waiting for their money.
The Department of Labor says Miller has had other employees file a complaint against him; two in 2003 and one in 2004.
Anyone who has not been paid by Miller or any other company is urged to file a complaint with Department of Labor.
