SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) -- Those who live in the proposed annexation areas surrounding Southport will have to wait one more week before the Board of Aldermen makes their final vote. Fred Gann was just one of many who came to the meeting Thursday night at City Hall in Southport. Residents were expecting to hear whether the Board of Aldermen's proposed annexation plans would be approved or not. However, because all six board members were not present, a decision could not be made. “The board voted three to two to pass each ordinance-area A and area B,” said Mike Isenberg, the Southport city attorney. “Although the ordinances passed, they did not become effective because the law requires four votes.” The Southport Aldermen voted in March to begin the process of annexing more than 400 acres surrounding the city. Fred Gann, who lives in one of the proposed annexation areas, says he predicts next week's vote to favor annexation. “Nobody's mind has changed,” said Gann. “I think their minds have been made up.” Isenberg seems to agree. Board member Kenneth Karn was out of town and could not make the meeting, but did have a statement read indicating he was in favor of annexation. “However, I’ve been here long enough to see board members change their minds many times so I wouldn't count anything out for sure,” said Isenberg. Gann says he feels this issue should never have been brought up in the first place and says it's unconstitutional. “I respect that old flag and what it represents and I’m not so sure that a lot of people that sit on this board give a damn about Old Glory and I do,” said Gann. The entire Board of Aldermen is scheduled to reconvene at the Southport City Hall next Thursday, June 9 at 6 p.m.
