WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The state Senate is one vote away from helping open the door for Castle Hayne to become New Hanover County's fifth incorporated area.
The Senate vote 50-0 in favor of the incorporation plan on second reading. A final vote is expected in the Senate Tuesday. The House then must consider the bill before the General Assembly's June 9 crossover deadline.
"The town wants incorporation so residents can determine their own future and have control over their own affairs," Castle Hayne incorporation chairman Tom Radewicz told WWAY.
If incorporated the town, in northern New Hanover county would provide police, fire, street lighting and zoning services to residents.
Castle Hayne first started seeking incorporation in 1997. The final step would be a local voter referendum in November.
