This actually is assault. Assault is technically the immediate threat of violence, regardless of the actual violence occurs. If I raise my fist to immediately threaten to hit someone, that's assault. If I actually hit them, that's battery....That's my understanding anyway.

Trying to get into a car and violently ripping off the door handle is definitely assault.
