One dead, another hospitalized after Columbus County shooting

COLUMBUS COUNTY -- One man is dead, another is hospitalized after a shooting in Columbus County. The incident happened early Sunday morning. Investigators say after the driver, Rodney Simms was shot, his car ran into a wooded area off Highway 701 just outside of Whiteville. Simms was taken to the hospital but died shortly after. According to the coroner, Simms was shot once in the back. Deputies say a passenger in his car was shot in the head, and is now listed in good condition at New Hanover Regional. The Columbus County Sheriff's Office is not saying where the shots came from, but the coroner believes the shots came from a car that was following the victims. The coroner says both of the victims were teens. Detectives have not said whether or not the shooting was random or if the victims knew their attackers.
