WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- New Hanover County Schools celebrated the graduation of their senior class students Saturday at Trask Coliseum.

Parents and teachers stood as proud supporters as graduates received their diplomas and look to take the next step.

"Honestly I had the best time in high school but I'm really, really excited to go on and move on to bigger and better things," said Ashley High School grad Savannah Reeves.

Reeves is one of the over 1,500 graduates of New Hanover County Schools this year.

On this graduation Saturday, although still happy for their students, there was a little more on the minds of Ashley High School educators.

"Nobody goes into a field thinking they are going to get cut after 12 years as far as their pay, let alone their job," says Ashley High School teacher Jeff Christner.

"In this case there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians. The Indians are the teachers and we need more Indians out there to be helping these students and guiding them for tomorrow," says Ashley High School teacher Thomas Frost.

Ashley High School graduates have reportedly received over four million dollars in scholarships. It is the most athletic and academic scholarships in school history.
