Pitt County schools considering fees for athletes

GREENVILLE, NC (AP) -- Pitt County schools may require high school and middle school students to pay to join a sports team.

The Daily Reflector of Greenville says a $20 participation fee is being considered to offset the overall cost of the athletic programs as well as help pay travel costs, which are not eligible for state reimbursement.

Assistant superintendent Michael Cowin says gas price hikes have put a pinch on team travel.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools require high school athletes to pay a $100 fee and middle school athletes $50. Buncombe County schools have a transportation fee of $20.

The Pitt County Board of Education's finance committee will hold a public meeting June 23 to discuss the idea.

School officials say students on free or reduced-price lunches likely would be exempted from the fee.
