State issues ozone alert

RALEIGH (AP) -- The state Air Quality Division is urging North Carolina residents to be careful not only because of the high heat expected today but because of high ozone levels.

The state issued a Code Orange alert for the Triangle and Charlotte areas. The alert means people should avoid outdoor exertion, limit driving, avoid running lawnmowers and should refuel vehicles after dark.

Forecasters say high heat will persist today with a high of 102 degrees expected in central North Carolina. A little relief is expected by Friday when the high drops to 98 and over the weekend highs are forecast at 90 to 92 degrees.
