BELMONT, NC (AP) - Belmont Abbey College is breaking ground on a maternity ward and after-care residence for single women. The Charlotte Observer reports Monday that the residence will be run by the Charlotte-based nonprofit Room at the Inn, an organization run by the Catholic Church to care for single pregnant women. The home will be built on four acres donated by the Benedictine monks. Belmont Abbey College President Bill Thierfelder says the project was conceived after a national survey found a striking need for services for pregnant women on college campuses. Rooms, meals and parenting education will be provided at no charge. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
