Smoke from NC wildfire cancels Marine exercise

NEW RIVER AIR STATION, NC (AP) -- Smoke from wildfires in North Carolina has caused New River Air Station to cancel a training exercise.

Fires burning in Pender County caused the Marines to cancel the exercise, which involved a tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel. It was part of larger exercise called Operation Mailed Fist, which involves every element of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing.

New River spokeswoman 1st Lt. Kristin Dalton says the Marines are trying to reschedule the exercise for Thursday at the Oak Grove Airfield northwest of Pollocksville. The exercise Wednesday was to be held at Camp Davis.
