NC wildfire is now contained, but still burns

READ MORE:

STUMPY POINT, NC (AP) -- A wildfire that's been burning in Dare County since May 5 has now been fully contained.

The North Carolina forestry service says the 70-square-mile blaze that started near Stumpy Point is 100 percent contained, but that doesn't mean it's completely stopped burning.

Hot spots remain, especially on areas of high ground where it's difficult to get heavy equipment. Firefighters will remain in the area to continue pumping water and to monitor the situation.

A rain helped crews contain the blaze, but officials say it will take about six inches of rain to fully extinguish the remaining pockets of ground fire.

A ban on open burning remains for 27 eastern North Carolina counties because of the heightened risk of wildfire.
