The Orientals, in the 1700s and early 1800s, had a cure for about anything.
Tell the guilty party to choose a limb for removal and he might go free. So he would; and the Gaurd would use a sharp sword to remove the chosen arm or leg. Then apply hot tar or pitch to the stub to stanch the flow of blood.
Three weeks later, when he has regained his strength; repeat the process.
Continue repeating the process until all 4 limbs are gone.
Then put him in a sack and chuck him in the water.
