JACKSONVILLE, NC (AP) -- A Jacksonville man has pleaded guilty to killing his mother and nearly killing his father with a butcher knife more than three years ago. The Daily News of Jacksonville reported that 23-year-old Julius Marsailis Thomas was sentenced Wednesday to 22 to 28 years in prison on charges of second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors said Julius Thomas and his father were arguing in January 2008 when the younger man grabbed a knife and began attacking his parents in their home. Theresa Thomas later died from her wounds. Kenneth Thomas told the court Wednesday he still loves his son. Julius Thomas was initially declared incompetent to stand trial, but psychologists later testified his condition had improved. (Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
