STORMTRACK 3: Dangerous heat expected today

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The heat wave gripping much of the country over the last few days arrives on our doorstep today.

Temperatures will climb to near 100 degrees across the area this afternoon - especially away from the coast. Extremely high humidity will make matters worse. The Heat Index - or how it "feels" outside - will reach anywhere from 105 to 109 this afternoon; dangerously high levels.

Heat related illnesses such as dehydration, fever, exhaustion, as well as dizziness and fainting will be possible after physical activity outside today.

Stay inside in air conditioning when possible, but if you need to be outside, make sure to wear light weight, and loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

The heat will be just as bad heading into Wednesday, with more heat advisories likely.
